A Covenant Marriage

There are a few things in particular that I want to implement into my life to ensure that my marriage is a covenant marriage and not a contractual marriage. One that I would like to implement into my life when I get married is taking care of my husband. I want to serve and care for him, especially when he is going through a trial. It’s important that we love and care for each other. Another one that I think is important to keep a covenant marriage is to know that natures of male and female spirits complete and perfect each other. One gender is not better or above the other, they are equal and complete each other.

Another thing that I want to implement into my life is to focus on the important of eternal marriage and how that works with the Father’s Plan of Happiness. Elder Bednar gives a talk called “Marriage is Essential to His Eternal Plan.” In there he says, “Emphasizing marriage without linking it to the simple and fundamental doctrine of the plan of happiness cannot provide sufficient direction, protection, or hope in a world that grows increasingly confused and wicked.” By knowing the doctrine of the plan, it leads men and women to prepare for eternal marriage. It defeats the fears and overcome the uncertainties that come with marriage. Understanding the plan also strengthens our resolve to honor our covenants within the marriage. This is important for me to understand as I am preparing to get married in a couple months.

One last thing that is important to implement into my life is to stick strong to the gospel while I prepare for marriage. Satan desires that all men and women might be miserable like unto himself. He is especially going to try hard to confuse our understandings about gender, promote premature and unrighteous use of procreative power, and to hinder righteous marriage precisely. Part of God’s Plan is to be sealed in the temple so that we can have a family. Family is central to Plan of Happiness.

Although there are many things that I want to do to implement into my life to make sure my marriage is a covenant marriage, I want to always remember the ultimate blessings of love and happiness that I will obtain throughout the covenant relationship of eternal marriage.
