Becoming One
President Eyring gives a great talk about becoming one in our marriages and what we can do to become one between us and our spouse. He talks about how the Savior spoke of "unity and how we will have our natures changed to make it possible." There are many things I learned from this talk that I want to use in my own marriage to become one with my husband. I also liked that he speaks about how families should come together as one. President Eyring says, "We see in His words the way families, will be made one, as will all the children of our Heavenly Father who follow the Savior and His servants." I thought this was interesting because we constantly are seeking to follow God's plan and end up returning to Him again. We don't have to do this alone, but together with our spouses and with our children as well.
Something that we can do to become one is to always have the Spirit with us. The Spirit unifies families together and makes it a place in our homes where we can teach, learn, and grow from each other. President Eyring says, "where people have the Spirit with them, we may expect harmony. The Spirit puts the testimony of truth in our hearts, which unifies those who share that testimony." When our homes are guided by the Spirit, then we can become one. The Spirit must be there in order to become one with your spouse or with your family. In order to have the Spirit to be with us, we have to keep our covenants. President Eyring lists 3 covenants that we have made to keep the Spirit with us at all times. He says to:
1. We promise to take His name upon us.
2. We promise to always remember Him.
3. We promise to take the sacrament to keep His commandments, all of them.
These are great steps for us to focus on so that we can have the Spirit with us at all times.
President gives some great steps and thoughts for how we can become one with our spouses and family. I know one couple that has illustrated the power of becoming one. This couple is my brother Drew, and his wife Chelsea. They have been married for almost 5 years now and they have become closer then ever. I can see that they have "become one" now in their marriage and especially in their family now that they have a baby boy. An example of how I have seen them become one is that a couple years ago, they were trying really hard to have a baby and they couldn't. It was so hard to see them both struggle with it, and even though all their friends were having children and they couldn't yet, they were happy for them and turned towards each other to lift and build each other up, instead of turning away from each other. I know that Heavenly Father has been watching over them because they were able to get pregnant and ended up having a baby boy. His name is Declan and he is the sweetest, little guy! I know that together they have become one as a family and that they can tackle anything that happens to them together. I am grateful for their examples to me and i'm so happy I have a nephew!
